Arpino

You can feel the presence of history in the ancient district of Civitavecchia, a fortress from pre-Roman times, to which later medieval fortifications were added. From Arpino it is obvious to take a day trip to Rome, and the area around Arpino is full of beautiful nature and rural charm.

Area

This is an authentic holiday home in the old watchtower of Arpino. Arpino is located on a hill east of the Liri Valley
and was the birthplace of the Roman politician Caius Marius and the orator Cicero.

The town of Arpino is very nice; Very quiet and calm, not very touristy. Good walks around the city and otherwise really nice walking area in general around the city. There is a Camino from San Benedict on the Arpino and Francis of Assisis route going through Arpino.

In Arpino, even the city is just worth seeing, but you should also see the old, original town, which is a few kilometers away – Civitavecchia. The city is almost a kind of open-air museum, but vibrant and with residents.

The town’s cemetery is huge – Cemeterio – and is located on the road to Civitavecchia. We should also take a look at it. Many different types and sizes of grave monuments and very peaceful. Note the small intermistic stalls outside selling flowers etc.

In the immediate area you should see the town of Isola del Liri. It is located in the valley of the river Liri. Very nice town with waterfalls inside the city by the old hydroelectric power station. In addition, a fine restaurant street with many cozy cafes and restaurants.

Sora is a slightly larger town with shopping opportunities for groceries.

In addition, of course, Pompei, an approximately 1.5-2 hour tour and the city of Casino with the famous monastery. In the Casino there is a large cemetery for the fallen during WW2.
